Osteoporosis is a progressive skeletal disease that can be divided into several stages. Typical of osteoporosis are a decreased bone mass and a porous bone structure. This makes the bones weaker and they break more easily. Frequent fractures are in the are of the vertebrae, the hip or the wrists.

Stages of osetoporosis

  • Stage 0, osteopenia: less bone mineral content (-1,0 to -2,5), no fractures.
  • Stage 1, clinical osteoporosis: descreased bone mineral content (more than -2,5), no fractures.
  • Stage 2, osteoporosis appears: bone mineral content decreased up to thee vertebral fractures that occured without trauma.
  • Stage 3, advanced osteoporosis: bone mineral content decreased, numerous vertebral fractures, very often additional to that also fractures of other bones.

Osteoporosis itself is not painful, but the bones, and especially the vertebrae, are more fragile and pliable because of the decreased density. The more progressive oesteoporosis is, the less resilient are the bones and the risc of fractures increases.

Severe pain can be caused by the vertebral fractures, the resulting sunken posture and muscular tension. The emerge and progession of osteoporosis can be counteracted to some extent.

A balanced diet, regular exercise and functional use of the bones by doing weightlifting and specifically eloaborated training are effecting the osteoporosis and it is possible to help the bones resistent.
